Highlights Reel: Cloud Foundry Summit Philadelphia

A Look Back at Cloud Foundry Summit Philadelphia

With the North American Cloud Foundry Summit just a few weeks behind us, we’re already looking ahead to the European Summit this September in the Netherlands. Such is the nature of a small team working hard to pull off the best possible event for their community!

Did you know the Cloud Foundry Foundation has under ten full-time employees? Every Summit you’ve been to has been planned and produced by a remote workforce with an events team of three and a marketing team of 3-4. Even our community doesn’t realize the small scale of our team at times given the size and scope of our Summits! Please make sure you give the events team a huge thanks next time you run into them at an event.

We’re a small team and a non-profit foundation, meaning we rely heavily on the support of our members and sponsors. We could not pull off these events without the investment of our awesome sponsors. A huge thank you to Diamond sponsors Comcast and VMware; Platinum sponsor IBM; Gold sponsors Dynatrace, Google, HCL, SAP and SUSE; as well as our Silver, Bronze and start-up sponsors. Learn how to sponsor.

Before we shift gears completely and start talking about Cloud Foundry Summit in Europe, we wanted to pull together a highlights reel of the Philadelphia Summit, so you can find news, photos and much more all in one place.

Cloud Foundry community

  • We solicited nominations from the Cloud Foundry community for our 2019 NA Summit Community Awards. Read the full post to find out who the winners were.
  • Executive Director Abby Kearns presents Community Awards

The Diversity Luncheon was a mini Summit with a variety of talks on topics related to inclusivity, including a presentation on digital accessibility and a panel on gender equity. Watch the full event.

  • Team 42 took home the Hackathon prize! Christian Brinker (evoila) and Benjamin Gandon (Gstack.io) won for their project intended to extend the developer’s UX, providing a way to extend the cf-push experience to CI/CD on Cloud Foundry. Check out the code and keep an eye out for an upcoming blog post.
  • Cloud Foundry User Day was the place for end users to get together and share their experiences with Cloud Foundry. There’s no better way to learn best practices than to trade stories over coffee and tea at User Day! For more user stories, watch the user panel with c-Com GmbH, DICK’S Sporting Goods and Liberty Mutual or check out the full User Stories track playlist.
  • We hosted our first-ever Contributor Summit at Summit and drew a crowd of over 100 contributors. Given the event’s success, we’ll be expanding its length at EU Summit and providing a bit more structure for our Cloud Foundry contributors.*
  • The Cloud Foundry Unconference is always a highlight at Summits. Read about all the planning that goes into an unconference, and make sure to stop by the next one in the Hague!
  • Technical events like the hands-on labs, trainings and certification exam took place thanks to help from our dedicated members, including anynines, Altoros, Dynatrace, VMware, Resilient Scale, SAP and Stark & Wayne.

Ecosystem announcements

  • The Foundation announced findings from its most recent global research in the report Adaptation, Not Adoption, is the Key to Digital Transformation: Why IT Strategy Requires a Perpetual State of Change. With more than half of companies surveyed putting mission-critical apps in the cloud, it’s clear that digital transformation is the new reality, and that companies must adapt to constant change to keep up.
  • Project Eirini is now passing the core functional tests that validate Cloud Foundry Application Runtime releases, with future work focused on production readiness and testing against hosted managed Kubernetes environments from various public cloud providers. Initially proposed by IBM, Eirini has full-time engineers from Google and VMware working on the project, in addition to continued contributions from IBM, SAP and SUSE. The software is now mature enough that early adopters have begun to deploy it into production environments.
  • The Foundation announced its first two Certified Systems Integrators, following on the program’s launch in October at the European Summit. Each with at least ten Cloud Foundry Certified Developers on their teams, Accenture and HCL have demonstrated contributions to the Cloud Foundry community through contributing code, hosting meetups, Foundation membership and more.
  • Cloud Foundry Foundation members Altoros, anyines, EngineerBetter, evoila, Grape Up, IBM, Packet, VMware, Resilient Scale, Stark & Wayne, SuperOrbital, SUSE, Swisscom, TIBCO and Zettaset announced their own news at Summit. Read the full press release to see what’s brewing in the ecosystem!
